live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air...

Money Plant

Money Plant, Oil on canvas, 10" x 10"

This painting also has a bit of wabi sabi and is one of my recent favorites.  The money plant is such a humble-looking, almost weedy plant but, due to its shiny, coin-shaped leaves, has a common name that suggests the opposite.

Tea Cup

Tea Cup, Oil on canvas, 10" x 10"

Private Collection

This painting, like the tea cups used in zen tea ceremonies has intentional flaws.   The drips which you can see on the lower right side of the canvas were left as is instead of painted out.  Many non-western cultures have a concept like wabi sabi, believing that a flaw is part of the beauty of an object.  Intentional flaws are found in Persian rugs, Pomo basket weaving and zen tea cups, to name a few.  Sometimes these flaws are viewed as metaphorical portals and other times they are created with the belief that only the Divine is perfect.
